State sees alarming obesity trends in Martin County

“The more you weigh, the shorter you live and the sicker you get,” said Dr. John Armstrong, Florida’s Surgeon General visiting the St. Lucie and Martin County Health Departments today,  “We can’t afford this. Just to manage 4 chronic conditions from obesity alone–high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and arthritis–is 34 billion with a B–that’s half the state budget.”

Martin County health officials see the trend starting early. At about 5th grade, students begin to gain weight. Within the next few years, nearly half are overweight or obese.
