South Florida Sun Sentinel: Allen West goes north and political spotlight follows

(L.) Allen West, Robert Crowder

Sun Sentinel columnist Michael Mayo asks: “Will voters in Florida’s new 18th Congressional district embrace Allen West as a rising conservative star or reject him as a polarizing outsider? Part 1 of the answer comes Tuesday, when West faces longtime Martin County Sheriff Bob Crowder in the Republican primary in a district that spans northern Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties.”

West has moved north to Palm Beach Gardens, retreating from the Broward and Palm Beach County district he served for one term after a tough voter reapportionment following the 2010 census. His real fight will be Nov. 6, when he will likely face another well-funded Broward transplant, Democrat Patrick Murphy.

National Democrats have made toppling West a priority, and the race is expected to be one of the nastiest, costliest Congressional battles in the U.S.

Wherever West goes, attention and controversy seem to follow.
