Florida Southeast Connection, NextEra Energy’s 126-mile natural gas pipeline, began operations Wednesday morning.

Florida Southeast Connection is the 126-mile southernmost portion of a 685-mile pipeline that originates in Alabama. That tail end will go through Osceola, Polk, Okeechobee, St. Lucie and Martin counties and end at FPL’s Martin County plant near Indiantown.

It connects with the newly operational 515-mile Sabal Trail pipeline at a hub in Osceola County. The pipeline  is now supplying 100 percent of the natural gas used at Florida Power & Light Co.’s Riviera Beach power plant, and will be feeding some of FPL’s other plants in South and Central Florida over the next few days, FPL spokesman Dave McDermitt said.
