PBPost: Halpatiokee Bridge would cross, despoil land bought for preservation

Award-winning Palm Beach Post blogger Sally Swartz on the proposed Halpatiokee Bridge: With both the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon suffering the effects of many previous bad decisions, decision-makers should take a last look at a pristine paradise before they sign off on destroying it.

The road east of the bridge would end close to the foundering downtown Port St. Lucie. Some claim the route also could lead to proposing a final link, a new bridge across the Indian River Lagoon to Hutchinson Island.

A more northern route is cheaper, disturbs fewer wetlands, and would leave the Halpatiokee wilderness alone.
