Martin County Sheriff’s Office reports that a 67-year old man was randomly attacked and robbed as he was walking along SW Mapp Road in Palm City Saturday morning. It happened around 10:40 a.m.

The suspect initially walked past the man, then circled back and attacked the victim from behind.

The attacker ripped a gold chain from the victim’s neck and took off running.

Deputies on the 300-Shift quickly set up a perimeter around Mapp and Murphy Road.

After an intense search, Sergeant Pat Calasuonno and Deputy Becky Brady saw the suspect, identified as 20-year old Thomas Jabarus Baldwin of Ft. Lauderdale, trying to hide in a wooded area near Mapp Road and Capri Street.

Baldwin was taken out of the woods and arrested. The victim’s chain was recovered.

Baldwin told deputies that he was dropped off with the intentions of trying to rob someone.

When he was arrested, he asked the deputy if he was, by chance, in Martin County. He went on to say, he didn’t realize Palm City was in Martin County.

Baldwin has been charged with Robbery and Battery on a Person 65 or over. The victim was treated at the scene for abrasions.
