Palm Beach Post: Martin officials fete centenarian enviro Louise Carnevale

Sally Swartz of The Palm Beach Post

From Sally Swartz, award-winning Palm Beach Post blogger: Not everyone remembers Louise Carnevale today. But they have her to thank for the survival of the Environmental Studies Center. Every Martin student spends time at the center, one of the first of its kind in the nation. Its mission: To teach children in kindergarten through eighth grade about Florida’s and Martin’s woods, waters and wildlife. When budget cuts threatened the center, Carnevale worked to get a permanent endowment for it and an Environmental Studies Council to oversee future fundraising.

Many credit the Center with creating a new generation of river warriors, who united through social media rallies to fight for an end to harmful discharges to the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon.
