Palm Beach Post: Martin County teachers decry school board ‘blackmail’

(Source: Palm Beach Post)

From The Palm Beach Post’s award-winning blogger, Sally Swartz: On Tuesday, Martin County teachers, wearing black and waving signs, picketed the school board headquarters to protest terms of the board’s proposed contract for doling out about $2 million in state money for teacher raises.

Teachers twice tried a new way to carry their message to the school board and the community. In 1996, a billboard greeted all entering Stuart from Interstate 95: “Welcome to Martin County, home of the lowest paid teachers from Daytona Beach to Key West.” A 1998 billboard on Florida’s Turnpike: “Martin County first year teachers: $30,000. Tenth year: $32,901. No wonder we can’t keep qualified teachers.”
