From The Martin County Sheriff’s Department: Despite warnings that our interdiction teams are on the roadways, 36-year old John Allen Crane Jr took a chance anyway.

Crane’s excessive speed landed him a traffic stop as he headed northbound on Florida’s Turnpike through Martin County.

That stop blossomed into an arrest, after a MCSO K-9 Unit detected an illegal substance in the car.

When deputies searched the vehicle, they found 162- grams of heroin tucked inside a bag in the backseat.

Crane told detectives the substance was a probiotic for his dog.

He was charged with Trafficking in Heroin and taken to the Martin County Jail on a $200,000 bond.

He was also issued a traffic warning for speeding.

John Crane, a convicted sex offender from Dade County, has a violent criminal history including kidnapping and sexual battery of a person 12 years or older, home invasion robbery, and armed burglary.

He was released from the Florida Department of Corrections in 2001. (Refer to the Department of Corrections website DC number 197171. )

Thirty-nine of the 63 overdoses reported in Martin County this year can be attributed to heroin.

Six of those overdoses resulted in deaths. In March alone, there were nine reported heroin related overdoses, resulting in two deaths.

Tonight, 162-grams of the toxic substance will not make it to our streets.
