The Martin County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office, is investigating an early Friday morning shooting involving a Martin County Sheriff’s Sergeant.
The shooting took place around 1:30 a.m. Friday morning in the rear parking lot of Scooters Fun Foods and Spirits, located at 8913 SE Bridge Road in Hobe Sound.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Sergeant James Warren Sr., a 29 year veteran of the department, went to investigate a suspicious vehicle in the rear parking lot of Scooters, when a physical altercation broke out between the vehicle’s driver, 40- year of old Richard Haston of Hobe Sound, and Sergeant Warren.
The altercation ended when Mr. Haston got back into the Jeep he was driving, and attempted to run over Sergeant Warren.
Sergeant Warren fired at least two shots into the windshield of the moving vehicle, hitting Haston in the upper torso. Haston died at the scene. Sergeant Warren was injured when the vehicle hit him. He also sustained injuries from the initial altercation. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.
Richard Haston is a repeat felony offender with arrests including fleeing and eluding a police officer, battery on a police officer, and escape.
Sergeant Warren is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
