Martin County Sheriff’s Detectives search for suspect: Violent assault in Palm City

Martin County Sheriff’s Detectives are searching for an 18-year-old Orlando man who broke into a home in Palm City Monday morning and assaulted the 52-year-old homeowner.

18-year-old Michael Jacob McGarry, also known as Jake McGarry, was visiting his mother’s home along the 4000 block of 42nd Avenue when he broke into a neighbor’s home and beat 52-year-old Charles Schlapkohl with a blunt object.

The victim was able to grab a gun and fire several shots at McGarry, hitting and disabling his vehicle. The suspect, however, took off on foot and hid in a near-by wooded area.

As a precaution, Citrus Grove Elementary School, which is near the wooded area, was placed a short lockdown. That lockdown has been lifted.

The two families live on the same street and have had an on-going dispute. Charles Schlapkohl was taken to Lawnwood Hospital with injuries to his head and neck.

McGarry, who is from Orlando, is still at large. A perimeter around the area was set up and units are still active at this time. Posted is a photo of McGarry. If you see him, you are urged to call 9-1-1.
