From Ginny Sherlock, renowned local attorney, civic activist, and former Associated Press editor: A motion was filed today with the Fourth District Court of Appeal for leave to file a friend-of-the-court brief in support of Maggy Hurchalla in the Lake Point case by

–The League of Women Voters of Florida

— Sierra Club

— Florida Press Association

— Florida Society of News Editors

— Natural Resources Defense Council

— American Civil Liberties Union of Florida

— Fane Lozman (who has won two US Supreme Court decisions on government speech in Riveria Beach)

— The Brechner Center (for freedom of information at the University of Florida)

Motions to submit amicus briefs in support of Maggy’s position were previously filed by the First Amendment Foundation and by environmental organizations including the Pegasus Foundation, Friends of the Everglades, Bullsugar.org and the Florida Wildlife Federation.

Attorneys from the prestigious Washington, D.C., law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr filed motions this week for permission to appear as co-counsel in Maggy’s appeal along with preeminent First Amendment attorney Rick Ovelmen and his colleagues at Carlton Fields Jorden Burt in Miami and Talbot D’Alemberte of Tallahassee, former president of Florida State University and the American Bar Association.
