From a Palm Beach Post commentary by Donna Dupuy, Treasure Coast-based public relations, marketing and political campaign consultant: Most Americans would be mortified to hear about an election in which half of the registered voters were barred from voting — but that’s exactly what happens in Florida every election cycle.

For example, in Martin County, a write-in candidate caused the disenfranchisement of 53,265 of our 105,481 voters in a county commission race during this year’s primary.

Anyone with a sense of fair play and a real desire to encourage voter participation in elections must agree that it is time to have open primaries in Florida.
