Former Governor Claude Kirk (1926-2011) lies in state in Tallahassee

With Martin County’s Nat Reed as his top environmental adviser, Mr. Kirk killed condominium projects in Biscayne Bay, thwarted a proposal to build a massive airport in Big Cypress Swamp and helped persuade the federal government to pull the plug on a cross-state barge canal.

He created the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and what became the Department of Environmental Protection and presided over the rewriting of the state’s 19th century constitution. For more:
