Fleeing suspect takes off into Palm City woods during drug enforcement operation

24-year-old Jonathan Mesta’s night quickly went downhill when he refused to stop for Martin County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Detectives during an interstate drug enforcement operation Monday night.

Mesta, of Port St. Lucie, prompted a two mile pursuit that began near the exit of the Interstate 95 and ended on State Road 714, near Cobblestone.
Deputies had to deploy stop sticks to disable Mesta’s fleeing Kia.
Once the car was stopped, Mesta bailed out and ran into a dark wooded area.
As he made a run for it, he ran straight into a barbed wire fence.
Deputies helped Mesta out of the dark wooded area and brought him back to the road where paramedics rendered aid.
He was taken to the hospital to be treated for cuts from the fence.Mesta faces felony fleeing, and felony drug charges. His Kia was seized.
