Fish with large tumor on head found in Palm City’s Bessey Creek, near St. Lucie River estuary

David Smith caught a sheepshead with a large, pink tumor on the side of its head Saturday, just south of where Bessey Creek enters the St. Lucie River estuary in northern Palm City.

New Times reports that a fish caught in Palm City over the weekend has been the focus of concerned environmentalists and scientists in recent days. The fish, a sheepshead, was caught in Bessey Creek in Palm City, just south of the C-23 canal, where the creek enters the St. Lucie River estuary.

Mark Perry with the Florida Oceanographic Society says it’s likely the tumor formed when something in the water chemistry affected the fish’s skin.
