The Dominican-born Salomon Melgen, who ran wildly successful retinal clinics in West Palm Beach, Wellington, Delray Beach and Port St. Lucie, lavished Senator Robert Menendez [D-NJ] with gifts and contributed $750,000 to his campaigns, prosecutors claim. Menendez was a frequent flier on the physician’s private jet. He was a regular guest at Melgen’s resort in the Dominican Republic. Melgen also paid for a three-night stay for Menendez and his girlfriend at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Paris, where rooms go for $1,500-a-night, prosecutors claim.

In return, Menendez lobbied federal agents to get three of Melgen’s foreign-born girlfriends into the country, they said. The powerful senator also tried to get the State Department to intervene in Melgen’s dispute with Dominican leaders over the eye doctor’s multimillion-dollar port contract with the island nation.
