Extreme Sports project update, comments and video from Martin Commisison meeting

Paraphrased comments from Stuart attorney Virginia Sherlock: Public comment was excellent at the BOCC meeting of April 17, especially with regard to the Extreme Sports-cum-Expanded EOTCSC comp plan amendments.

The brilliance of Guardian President Peter Conze’s comments was exceeded only by his prolonged and unwavering look at Patrick Hayes after reminding Hayes of his town hall meeting commitment to oppose the proposals. (See video of Conze’s comments below.)

Anne Scott was very articulate and delivered her comments beautifully. John Haddox made an excellent point about the precedent-setting effect of extending the ETOCSC from one corner of the property to the entire 114 acres . . . What happens when the owners of the other three corners ask for the same extension? Public comment added layer after layer of solid argument and common sense as well as community pride. Donna Melzer’s remarks were on point and eye-opening, and her rousing morning public comments invoked a well-deserved round of applause.

Although urging an immediate final vote (no) was appropriate, I can’t say I disagree with the ultimate decision (on a 3-2 vote) to give the applicant a continuance to try to “fix” the amendments and bring them back on May 8.

I have counted more than 300 e-mails to commissioners from residents opposed to the amendments since March 29.  It will be interesting to see how many more are generated between now and May 8 and how many folks will come out for the next meeting.
