Counterfeit currency alert for Martin County

(Source: Stuart Police)

Stuart Police are alerting the public about recent counterfeit $100 and $50 notes being passed to businesses. Please check these denominations of U.S. currency very carefully. Don’t just rely on a counterfeit detection pen, look at all of the security features available in the currency.

The suspect(s) are “washing or bleaching” an authentic $5.00 U.S. note and copying $100 or $50 back onto the altered note. We all know President Lincoln is on the $5.00 note, but Lincoln’s watermark should never appear on a $100 or $50.

If you have any information about the counterfeiter, please contact Detective Sergeant Heather Rothe at (772) 220-3923.

If you want to educate yourself about U.S. Currency or the security features, please visit U.S. Department of the Treasure Bureau of Engraving and Printing at www.moneyfactory.gov
