Action alert today: tax dollars at stake as developers try to shift their costs to residents

Martin County Conservation Alliance

WHO: Action alert sent from The Martin County Conservation Alliance to all Martin County residents and taxpayers

WHERE: Palm City Library at NE corner of Martin Downs Blvd. and Matheson Rd. (2nd stoplight from Palm City Bridge)

WHEN: from 5pm to 7 pm

WHAT: Fla. Dept. of Transportation (FDOT) will be talking about 8-laning I-95 from Becker Road to Indiantown Road

WHY:  A premature decision to add lanes could shift costs from developers to taxpayers.  Today, Hobe Grove application, for example says they would pay about $12 Million toward widening I-95 from Becker to Indiantown Road — but under Tallahassee legislators new rule [see page 4 athttp://www.dot.state.fl.us/planning/propshare] shows that now developers could get off without a penny toward roads if it is decided road expansion already needed.

See info at Stuart News article: Proposed expansion of I-95 through Martin, St. Lucie counties topic of public meeting Wednesday By Lisa Bolivar Tues, Dec6, 2011

“PALM CITY — There will be a two-hour public meeting Wednesday so that people can discuss the possible expansion of a dozen miles on Interstate 95 through Martin and parts of St. Lucie counties.”

For $84 Million: “The proposed expansion will affect roadways south of Southwest High Meadow Avenue to north of Becker Road, a distance of approximately 12 miles, according to a DOT statement… saying the region is expecting an increase in development and population, and that may require enlarging the transportation capacity.”  The project takes 2-3 years to complete.
