72-year-old Palm City man arrested for planting hoax bombs in Martin Downs Publix

Detectives credit grocery store managers and alert employees for ending the streak of alarming behavior of a 72-year old Palm City man who planted hoax bombs inside a busy grocery store.

At this hour, Martin County detectives are still questioning 72-year old Richard Edward Capon, of SE Egret Way in Palm City, as to why he went into a Publix Supermarket on Martin Downs Boulevard, planting fake bomb like devices on four separate occasions. The hoax bombs starting appearing in the middle of March.

Each time, alert store employees found the device and notified managers, who promptly called the Sheriff’s Office. Detectives were able to retrieve store video showing Capon inside the store with a bag containing the device. The video shows Capon pulling the device out, and planting it on a shelf. Capon, a former Eastern Airlines pilot told detectives that he did it to see what kind of reaction he would get.

Capon has been charged with Planting A Hoax Bomb. He is being held on $10,000 bond.
